New Barricades

The following is a poem spotted in a museum in Oslo, Norway.

New Barricades

Once freed from absolute poverty,
people everywhere have always sought more land,
more wealth, more possessions:
not only for their own sakes,
but with a view to owning more than others,
more than last year.

We have always had to build barricades and bastions
to defend ourselves against our enemies
who would take from us what was ours.

History repeats itself - but the threat has changed.
For the first time
we must defend ourselves against ourselves,
against our own greed,
which threatens our global environment.

We have built new barricades
from which to wage the war to save our earthly home.
