The Centre for Education & Training in the Peel Region of Ontario is coordinating an innovative project funded by Citizenship & Immigration Canada called the Youth Exchange Program to assist newcomer youth between the ages of 13- 24 years of age during the first three years of their arrival in Peel/Halton Region. The goal of the program is to assist newcomer youth & families to feel fully connected to their new communities.
Youth volunteers are currently being recruited to engage in the planning of community activities and events targeted to newcomer youth and their parents. The Community Event Planning Committee will be made up of youth who are new to Canada as well as Canadian-born youth. The Youth Exchange Team hopes that these activities and events will help to connect youth with their community while enhancing their self-confidence and enjoyment of their new lives in Canada. The program also provides newcomer youth with the added benefit of volunteer experience and the development of communication while meeting new people and making community connections!
Upcoming events that the Youth Volunteer Committee is currently planning include a Holiday Social and Education & Summer Employment Fair on February 7th 2009 at HJA Brown Education Centre. Volunteers are excited about the prospect of helping peers in their communities.
“I want to give back to the community the way the community gave to me and my family when we first came to Canada,” says one Youth Exchange volunteer.
